The American Journal of Human Genetics Editor-in-Chief

The American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) invites applications for the position of Editor-in-Chief (EiC), American Journal of Human Genetics (AJHG). Now celebrating its 75th anniversary, AJHG is ASHG’s flagship scientific journal that continues to publish many of the most important findings in human genetics.  Together with the ASHG annual meeting and robust, year-long digital programming, AJHG, alongside its sibling journal HGG Advances, is a premiere venue for the communication of high-quality and thought-provoking scientific research and review.

The appointment shall be for a 3-5-year term beginning in late fall 2025, enabling the new EiC to help shape and inform the evolving directions and priorities for the journal. The EiC will work collaboratively with the Director of Scientific Publications, as well as the EiC of HGG Advances, to achieve publishing goals; a staff of scientific editors and an administrative assistant will be provided by ASHG.

The Society has appointed a Search Task Force chaired by Susan Slaugenhaupt, PhD. Additional members include Bruce Gelb, MD, Claudia Gonzaga-Jauregui, PhD, Chris Gunter, PhD, Heather Mefford, MD, PhD, and David Nelson, PhD.


Who can submit an application?

Any ASHG member, regardless of career stage, membership type, or experience with the Society.

ASHG recognizes the broad diversity of our field (scientific specialty, geographic location, ancestry, gender, and other facets of diversity) and encourages applications from diverse applicants.

 

What to have ready for an application submission:

You may begin the application, save and exit, and complete the application any time before the deadline.

You will be asked to provide:

  • Basic applicant information: institution, degree
  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Responses to 5 short-answer questions, 250-500 words maximum each
  • Confirmation that you have behaved consistently with the standards articulated in the professional conduct standards of the current ASHG Code of Ethics.   

Selection process:

When applying, please see related explanation of the position's main responsibilities. The Search Task Force will also consider the following criteria:

  • Previous editorial experience
  • Candidate’s indication that they have the time needed to lead the journal, with support from ASHG staff and the publisher
  • A professional record of excellence in human genetics and genomics research, and capacity to influence and encourage content submission from a broad and diverse community
  • Familiarity with the scientific publishing landscape and business models
  • Evidence of good management skills and ability to lead others collegially
  • Interest in honoring AJHG tradition while also undertaking strategic and innovative directions in scientific publishing
  • Expressed willingness to work collaboratively with HGG Advances and ASHG leadership on scientific publishing strategies and direction

Applicants will be notified of their application status in early-mid October. Finalists will be identified at that time; and finalists will be asked to interview. Interviews will be held in Denver, CO on Saturday, November 9, the final day of the ASHG Annual Meeting. All interested parties are asked to hold this date, pending selection as a finalist. All applications will be held in strict confidence.
