Call for Applications and Nominations to Serve on the 2027 ASHG Board of Directors

Applications and nominations deadline  March 20, 2026

For terms beginning January 1, 2027

 

POSITIONS OPEN IN 2027:

  • President (1 vacancy): The President will serve a one-year term as President-Elect (2027), a one-year term as President (2028), and a one-year term as Past President (2029). 
  • Directors (4 vacancies): 2 full members, 1 Trainee, 1 Early Career: Directors will serve a three-year term from January 1,  2027, through December 31, 2029.

DESIRED COMPETENCIES, EXPERIENCE, & EXPERTISE

  • Current 2026 ASHG membership (applicants and nominators)
  • Knowledge of ASHG’s mission, purpose, goals, policies, programs, services, strengths, and needs
  • Candidates who embody the following core competencies:
    • Strategic Leadership - Vision, integrity, and experience navigating complex scientific or organizational challenges. 
    • Scientific & Professional Excellence - Deep expertise in genetics or genomics and a strong record of research, publications, or professional contributions. 
    • Commitment to ASHG & Community - Active engagement in ASHG programs, volunteer roles, or mentorship. 
    • Interpersonal & Ethical Qualities - Strong communication skills, collaborative spirit, and a commitment to inclusivity and ethical conduct.
  • Candidates who contribute to a strategic and strong Board culture by:
    • Prior involvement in the Society’s programs, service in volunteer leadership roles (such as committees), and/or leadership experience on boards or in mid‑ to senior‑level management. 
    • Bringing a strategic perspective to the Society’s priorities and commitment to supporting the evolving needs of the genetics and genomics research community. 
    • Being respected within their communities and excelling in collaborative environments where decisions are made collectively. 
    • Strengthening the Board’s commitment to welcoming and celebrating people with a breadth of experiences, backgrounds, and areas of expertise. 
  • Basic and translational research: We strive to include basic, translational, and clinical researchers

    NOMINATING A COLLEAGUE

    *Please note: After a nomination has been submitted, nominees will be contacted to confirm their acceptance of the nomination and a link to a form to complete the required application questions.

    • Nominee's basic information, including institution and professional area of expertise
    • Application Questions: 
      • ASHG Experience: volunteer experience with ASHG (e.g., committees, working groups, etc.) - 150 words max 
      • Experience & Impact: unique experiences, scientific contribution and impact, and prior leadership/other roles - 150 words max 
      • Communication Style: characterize communication style in fostering dialogue, encouraging collegiality and collaboration, and building consensus - 150 words max
      • Core Competencies: demonstration of ASHG's core competencies (Interpersonal & Ethical Qualities, Commitment to ASHG & Community, Strategic Leadership, and Scientific & Professional Ethics) - 200 words max
    • Confirmation that, to your knowledge, the nominee has behaved consistently with the standards articulated in the professional conduct standards of the current ASHG Code of Ethics.

    Application and Nomination Review Process

    After the submission deadline, the Nominating Committee will review all nominations and determine the final ballot per the ASHG Bylaws. The Nominating Committee, with support from the Executive Committee, develops a slate of prospective Board members that embodies the Society’s values in leadership, considering scientific background, professional level, commitment, active participation in ASHG, and pertinent human genetics and genomics expertise.

    Elections for the 2027 Board of Directors
    The election for 2027 Board service will take place in the summer of 2026. Per the ASHG Bylaws, at least two (2) candidates are required to be put forth for each director position, and one (1) candidate is required to be presented for the president-elect position.
